Default Singer 301A darning foot?

Hello everyone!! I recently purchased my first vintage machine...singers 301A. It has the most perfect straight stitch anyone could ask for. My question is, since the dog feed can be dropped, is it possible to free motion with this machine? And where would I get a slant needle quilting or darning foot for it. I have the "Big Foot" acrylic purple foot and it simply flops around. Thanks everyone.

I've used the hopping foot sold by SewClassic with great results. I only did one small table running with the 301 - just to see how it would work.

I had that same problem with the Big foot. sent it back. What works best for me is a vintage one I got on eBay. It took some looking around for one that was reasonably priced but it does the best for me. the one from sew classic works better on the 401. I can't remember, but I don't think I raised the lever to cover the feed dogs on that one.

That model works great for fmq. Mine came with an original darning foot. Had different opinions from people on being able to get a walking foot for it also. Took a chance on one made for slant shank machines (I think I bought mine from Sew Classic). It fits and works great. Think you'll love your machine.

You will love your 301. I have 3 but haven't done FMQ on any of them yet.

The Singer 301 or 301A machines are one of the best machines for FMQ. That’s why my wife took my 301A away from me and put it in her extra-large Singer cabinet, kicking her Singer 401A out into a smaller cabinet. She does all of her FMQing with her 301A, except for her King-sized quilts that she sends out to a long arm. It’s the machine she used to FMQ her Victory Quilt Wall Hanging (only, in pinks, purples. yellows, and greens instead of the normal red, white, and blue colors) that just won a Blue Ribbon at the Kiowa County Quilt Show this weekend.

Here are photos of her working on the quilt in February 2015, in the Blue Ribbon at the Quilt Show, and the hopping foot that she used to FMQ it.

Google your question, and you will find lots of answers for your Singer 301A, walking foot and others.

CD your wife does beautiful work. I bought a hopping foot like that for my 301 but haven't tried it yet.

I recently bought an embroidery/darning foot off of e-bay. I haven't received it yet, but it is supposed to work on any slant-needle machine.

CD, thank you and your wife for the photos of her quilting on her 301. I am a visual person, and it really helps me to believe it really can be done when I see someone else doing it and what they used. Beautiful quilt, Mrs. CD.

It seems that you and the Missus make a good team.
