Default Singer 401 motor

Hello all,
I just acquired a 401 from a friend (borrowed indefinitely?) and nothing happened but a whirring sound when I started it up. Opened it up and found the handwheel gear rather munched up and the motor for a 500 inside. I've found a new handwheel gear on eBay but I'm not sure what to do with the motor if it might be the reason the gear was worn down in the first place. If I can find the pinion for a 401 can I put that on the 500 motor? Or would it still be aligned funny so I should find a new motor? Right now I think I can get a motor and a handwheel gear for $50 US, do you think it's worth it?
I'm completely new to this but so far having fun with figuring things out.

You might try posting your question on this site also- www.victoriansweatshop.com. Several members from here who are experts in these machines post regularly on there.
