Try tooth paste to get the yellow stuff off. It works for head light covers.

I use SCHMETZ Jersey Ball Point or Stretch needles. Never had a problem with them.

I've only seen 2 types used in sewing machines. One is screw in, it uses an intermediate(5/8") base. The other is a dual contact bayonet base. If your machine doesn't have a bulb, unplug the machine and feel inside the socket. If it's threaded you need the intermediate based bulb, if it's smooth, the bayonet style.
