that seems high to me, too. Check estate sales or garage sales, even goodwill.
I picked up a Singer fashionmate from the church i quilt at for free. It sews great - only straight & zigzag, but the feed dogs do drop down, so i could do some free motion embroidery!!
I'd like to find some accessories...

They go anywhere from 100 to 500 bucks. Depends on if someone knows what they really have and if it is in great shape with all parts and case. You may not find a better deal if it is in great shape with decent case and attachments. Does it have the book with it? That is around 15 bucks....

Did you all see the ones down at the quilt show in Des Moines for $800.00 and one for $1200.00!!! Ouch!
I found mine in a friends attic. Needed a new motor and tuneup at the grand cost of $150.00.
If you are willing to watch ebay and craigslist you can find one for 250.00 or less.

I'd guess that the one selling at Des Moines for $1200 was a 222 instead of a 221...a freearm.
I just paid $300 for mine, which is NOT the norm for me, but this machine was pristine, and it was the year I wanted...
Watch ebay...you can get one much cheaper!

I looked, I don't think it was a free arm. Just thinking back it was on a cabinet. Maybe the cabinet was especially made for it. Still WOW.

I bought two featherweights in good shape this summer from an estate clear-out. The current owner had no clue what she had but even I was amazed at the price she asked - $30 each! I found another at a garage sale and this owner wanted $300 and there was no case, instruction book or attachments. If you really want it and it's in good condition, it's not ridiculous but if you're patient you may do better. I have hunted for featherweights for years and sometimes it's a long time before I find any and then two or three may pop up in a relatively short time. They are sometimes listed for sale as antique or Vintage Singers so don't forget to check all the sewing machine ads as you hunt for your special machine.
