What can anybody tell me about this piece? It is marked "Singer 541561". I found somewhere in my research that this is called a sheet metal driver for singer 15. What exactly is that? How is it used?

I would assume to be used as a small screwdriver.

Candace is right. It's a screwdriver for tightening up the needle clamp, presser foot clamp, etc.

It's stamped out of sheet metal, hence the name.
