Miriam,
Thanks for the info. I will try a size 18 needle with different points and see what happens.

What you are looking for in a needle is an eye large enough for the thread to go through easily and a long groove wide and deep enough for the thread to completely lay in. The 16 has the larger eye, but the groove may not be large enough for the 69 thread. The 16 ball point probably won't be any different than the a regular 16 since it doesn't have the larger eye nor larger groove. Try a size 18 needle. Hopefully clearer than mud.

I think that's what I was trying to say.

I've used 92 nylon thread in an 18 needle on a 15-91 making a boat cover. The edge reinforced for snaps was rolled canvas over a polyester webbing. So we are talking three layers of canvas and a webbing penetration. The 15-91 didn't even work hard. It makes a better stitch than my Reliable Barracuda which is a copy of the Sailrite LZ1. I wish I'd tried the 15 before purchasing the Barracuda. Don't give up on the 15. The right combo of thread/needle/tension should easily penetrate 4 layers of Sunbrella, etc. I use the Barracuda only when I feel I'm abusing a machine in a process. I don't abuse my beautiful Singers😁

A 15 should go through Sunbrella just fine. I had a clone that would hem jeans. Sold it. Poor guy was 5 ft tall and round and just needed something he could hem jeans. I had to teach him to sew, too.

we have a 1958 singer commercial machine that sews through vinyl, leather etc. come to Al and buy it from me. We used it for what we wanted, and now it collects dust.

My husband uses a Singer 111w-155 and / or a Consew 226 for his upholstery work and they are indeed workhorses. The Singer he got when his father passed away and his father used it daily for 20 years or more.
