Default THE FWS PONY CLUB Wk 7 Bright Hopes & Bird's Eye View Discussion Page

Well, Well, Well, here we are at the 7th week...I can't believe it...it seems like we just started this journey....All of you have been busy keeping the posts going...I do read most of them...it seems like I'm a lurker... I just finished a Boomerang here on the board...It was fun and now I really do have to start paying attention here. I'm wondering where all the other cowpokes disappeared to??? I guess they're hiding in the bushes somewhere...come out , come out, wherever you are!!!!!

Now for a letter

Letter of the Week #4--Keith Walker; Juneau County, Wisconsin

For those of you who enjoy reading about the Pony Children as they grew up, I
have a treat for you today.

I was able to find a photo of Keith Walker as an adult!! Please go to the photo
section to view his picture.

Keith was born, Keith Singletary Walker in 1904. The children in the picture on
page 11 are believed to be his sister Bernice (b. 1906), and brother Raymond (b.
1909).

Keith's parents were Levi Walker (b. 1879) and Clara Janetta Singletary (b.
1877) and they were married in 1902. The family was all listed in the 1910
census, but by the 1920 census, Keith's father was a widower. Keith's mom Clara
died sometime between the ages of 33 and 43, when Keith was between 5 and 15
years age. I do not know if his father remarried.

Keith married Myrtle Stewart who was also born in 1904. They both passed away
while living in Florida; Keith in 1972 at the age of 68, and Myrtle in 1984 at
the age of 80. It is unknown if they had any children.

The picture of Keith and Myrtle was taken in 1962 at Prairie Farm in Barron
County, Wisconsin. Keith is holding his great neice, Shelia Mickelson and his
wife is holding their great nephew, Mark James Mickelson; twins perhaps?

Thanks Anne. Glad your back in the saddle again and finished your other project. QE and Anael got me hooked on paper piecing so I started a Storm at Sea. I was going along great, first 12 blocks done then I realized there's like a bazillion more to do. It may become a wallhanging!
This weeks blocks were less challenging but have turned out so nice for everyone. I really don't like to applique so I'm glad this is the only applique block.

Thanks for the cookies, QE!! They're great--and not going to waist either; the best kind!! Is that fabric where you FWS valentine came from?
Glad you are enthusiastic about PP, Jan. Verdict still out for me.
Glad these are quick blocks as it will be the weekend before I get to these. Couple of others things have gotten in the way.

Jan, I don't like it either and will always try to take the easy way out. I cut a circle using postcard weight paper..then cut the fabric circle at least 1/2" larger...then using the yo yo technique gather the edge using small stitches pulling the thread so that the fabric folds itself over the paper circle...anchor the thread then press the whole thing... remove the paper...You now have a finished circle with the seam allowance folded and will not come apart.. stitch to whatever you need to. I also did that to the larger one..it was a little more cumbersome but it was better than needle turning the fabric. I love the totem pole fabric...so different...

Hope everyone is enjoying those cookies ... cherries and chocolate just seem to go together so well. And they were even better when warm!

OKSGlad ... yes that's the fabric used for the FWS Valentines touches!

DublB ... enjoy those nibblies! I did a separate thread where you can get a better look at the whole quilt ... complete with those racing stripes!

JanRN ... hope you didn't choke on your cookie, when you saw that D9P! Believe me, it's my one and only! I'm so not into applique either. That makes my 3rd attempt (2 in FWS and 1 here)

Honchey ... that's the same way I did the centre circle. When I pressed, I then spritzed it with some starch, so that helped hold it good and steady as I did my hand stitching. I noticed, I didn't get it totally smooth around the edge though.

The large circle, I did on the machine .... measured 1/2, 1/4 points and then pinned pinned pinned ....... and oh, kind of did it as PP, by sewing all the templates with running stitches to the fabrics and then went at it.

Yes, I enjoyed doing up these two blocks, remembering how I got to ride in the grand entry parade at the beginning of the rodeo in my home town. The middle block in Bright Hopes is our shetland pony mare with her colt. Guest room made the blocks look "yellow" on the light green sheet.

Bird's Eye View was fun to do, but the center is not sewn down...yet. We knew "George" who summered our pony mares a month to breed with his pony stallion, and had run a rodeo until his retirement from the scene, letting his daughter and son-in-law to take over the business on the road. It was quite an insight to behind the scenes in the rodeo. Real cowboying with the men and ladies who rode the circuit. Good people to "ride" with who took care of their animals before they took care of themselves.
