Default About kids and Christmas stockings... and the passage of time

My 14 year old daughter asked me on Christmas Eve how long I was going to continue to fill her brother's stocking. (He is 18 and started college this fall, out of state.)

My first thought was, "Forever!"

Then I thought, well, "Till I die!"

And then I realized that, should he marry someday, everything would be all changed.

So...

... as your kids grew and life changed, how did you handle "The Stockings"?

When my kids were all married I suggested we hang stockings for all of us and each person bring a little something to put in each one instead of me doing them. That lasted a couple years and then they said it was costing too much and since they did their own stockings at home - didn't want to do this one any more. Fine with me...It was expensive with spouses and kids.

My daughter is married with 3 kids and up until this year I always did a stocking for each of them. It really does get expensive even if you get the dollar stuff to put in them. So I decided not to do it any longer, besides they do their own stockings on Christmas Day. Everything changes.

Once my kids moved out on their own I stopped the stockings. I do hand miniature ones most years to represent them but do not fill anymore.

some years I do and some years I dont.... Now that they are gronw the years that I do then, ( and forthe older grand kids) I run all over and get mcdonalds gift coupons and burger kings, and subway and split them up and just stuff their stockings with these...........
One year when all the gkids were little I stuffed the parents stocking with hand mad coupons for baby sitting , ( like I didnt already baby sit) but then I made a big deal out of. " where 's the coupon>>>?" when they would ask for me to baby sit... they got a kick out of it.

We combine our sons stocking with the girls (wife and girl friend)...they get socks, gas gift card, cards, gloves, balls for their dogs and hand made gifts such as soap..next year will try doing candles. They love having stockings.

Daughters, sons-in-law, grandkids & I all have stockings. Christmas Eve dinner is at my house each year. Grocery bags with each person's name on it are in bedroom. We all (except GKs) bring little gifts to put in. Bags are brought home, stockings are stuffed & everyone opens their stockings on Christmas morning. Santa was very good to me this year He even brought me Christmas Peeps(reindeer, trees, snowmen)!

As my Children left home they took there stockings with them. My Mom made all there stockings just for them as they got married she made stockings for there spouse and any children that came with spouse. As the other grands were born she has made each there own, no two are alike. As adults they all fill there own family stockings Any gifts in there special stockings come from Santa. On Christmas morning as you wake up you are allowed to open your stocking and Santas gift when you want. Everything else you have to waite untill all the adults are up and all the animals have been fed, coffee made. This tradition came from my Grandpadad, He was from Denmark. I don't know if it was a Danish tradition or just the way his family did things. He also insested we leave the tree up untill after the first of the year for good luck. Grandpadad has been gone for many years now but all my kids and grandkids still honor his triditions.

MY oldest son is now 38. I still fill stockings for everyone- 3 kids & spouses 4 GK & 3 stepGKs.
I fill them with needed things & silly items. I love filling them & they love seeing what I can come up with for everyone.
I will probably continue until I no longer can, physically(sp?) or financially. It is my favorite Christmas tradition.
