I just hit the pound sign button as many times as I can until I hear a beeping noise on the other end as doing this screws up their computer system. A friend of the family who did telemarketing during college said this trick worked everytime.

Wow you are nicer than I am. I just talk over them saying I am not interested and thank you for calling and just hang up. I used to listen to what they have to say but not anymore. And if the caller asks for someone specific in our home, I will ask , "May I tell him/her who is calling?" If my husband or I are not expecting a call I usually just tell them he is not interested. My husband can be rather rude to the telemarketers, so I believe I am saving them his attitude.

Thanks for this tip. I usually just tell them that I am not interested and then hang up before they can continue.

Be sure and add, "Remove me/him/her from your list and do not call back". Legally, they aren't supposed to call back after you tell them this. Sometimes it works. But if you don't say those magical words (or something to that effect) they will keep calling.

Sorry, AhsleyR, those 'magic words' do not work! I've said it over and over, I've asked for a supervisor (who is never available), I've said no in more ways than I though there were to say it and they still call back. I even reported one company to the Better Business Bureau. We are registered with the "No Call List" for all our phones. But they keep on calling. Our cable company must be really hurting because not only do they send us 'promotional specials' in the mail, they have called 3 times in the last week! I'm so tired of all of them. And the new one - sending text messages to my cell phone! There should be a law against all this because I think it's harassment.

alleyoop, there is a law. Report them to the FCC. Once you tell them to remove you from their list, they are required by law to do so within 31 days. It is illegal for them to call you for 5 years after that. I've also heard a lot of "Internet Tough Guys" say they can sue for $500 but I don't know anyone who has actually done it. Personally, as soon as they pause for breath, I say, "Remove this number for your list" and hang up. I don't know who they represent and I don't care. But they don't call me much so it's not really an issue for me. But if you want to fight back, you need to report them for noncompliance.

Ask to be put in the do not call list. You can do this to everyone but charties and politicians.
