What an incredible quilt! I would love to know the story, too... I imagine a Conestoga wagon, with a bored and lonely woman piecing her way across the country on her way to California. Not much else to on that trip. This quilt is a perfect example of the old adage, "If the fabric is too ugly, it just isn't cut small enough". No ugly fabric in that quilt!

Wow Sue! Thank you so much for sharing this! What a beautiful example of a passionate quilter from back before we had all of our beloved quilting trinkets of today! I wish I could afford it. Someone mentioned it was priced 10 times it's value but I don't think so. I do think it is priced too high, but it is probably worth at least $1500. I buy a lot of antique quilts and have never seen one quite like this. Lovely. Interesting that it was made in California but currently resides in Lancaster PA. I just hope the current owner didn't weasel it away from a family for a little money to turn around and offer it for $$$$$$. I always feel sad when I see quilts like this leave a family. Isn't there SOMEONE in that family-even extended- that would value it and pass it down? Sigh, my quilting and genealogy passions combining!
