Anything fundamentally wrong with this layout

This may be an awful suggestion, but I myself would at least try it and if not liked put it back. BUT; have you tried taking the blocks with the strip in the middle and turning every other one and seeing how you like it? Hope I explained it right. I like unbalanced (sometimes). Like I said, it may be a horrible suggestion.

You have a good scrappy layout. I too would vote for a warmer color for the blocks -- I would go with a tone on tone in the light, warm beige category. When I make scrappy, I either group all the same squares in one area or I make sure the squares that are alike are not "neighbors" (ala Mary Ellen Hopkins -- one of my early teachers). That is why I suggest (like several others) that the two striped blocks on the lower right should be separated.
Other than that, if you are passionate about consistency, you can drive yourself crazy with a scrap quilt because it is hard to totally structure a quilt with a lot of fabrics. Make it pleasing to you.

If you are uncertain about a set up. Take a picture and turn it into black and white this will enable you to see if shades are evenly spread.
this looks fine to me I would tone in with a cream.

There's really no wrong way to put it together, as long as you like it. However, if it were mine I wouldn't put blocks with beige on the outside up against more beige or white. You need a little contrast or those blocks can get lost.
I would just try out a few things and see what I liked best. Taking a photo can sometimes help you see problems better than looking at the actual quilt, believe it or not...
