I am considering making a baby rag quilt out of flannel for a friend because they are just so darn cute. I have also read that it is not a good idea to make rag quilts for babies. What are your thoughts on this?

There are differing opinions. You will get both yes and no. But, I don't want any babies swallowing fuzz or getting the rag ends wrapped around finger and toes. It's simply not a good idea and let your best sense guide you. The same goes with invisible thread and buttons on quilts to babies. Why take the chance when there are so many other options?

I've made a couple and they turned out great. On the back I appliqued animals on them so that the baby could lay on that side when it was little. Make sure you wash them before giving them as a gift. There isn't too much freying after that and I've never seen any to have strings hanging from them for them to be caught up in. I'm not sure how those are being made. You can either put batting, a extra layer of flannel or nothing at all in them.

But they make the perfect drag around quilt for a 2 year old. Still make it crib size so it isn't too big for them to drag around. :)

i wash and dry mine several times before giving/using. never had reports of any problems with excess lint/strings afterward.

I made them for both of my grandbabies. I washed them a couple times before they were used and didn't see any strings on them. Neither baby stayed for long on the quilts and now they are drug all over the place. DD leaves them in the car so the grands will always have a quilt--warmth in the winter/spring and something to play/lay on in the summer fall.

This is the best way to make rags quilts baby and child friendly.

I haven't had any problems with my rag quilts. Just do as mentioned above and wash and dry prior to giving as a gift.
