I do something a little differently. I press a triangle into the end of each strip. Then I lay them out to sew with edges matching - no plus sign. I sew on the pressed line, press the seam open, and THEN trim the seam allowance. I even leave the selvage on, because most of it gets cut off with the seam allowance, and the little point that may be left is in the seam allowance.

Tartan, did you see the recent tip that Patrick Lose mentioned when he was on F&P Love of Quilting on PBS?? He has a way of removing a bit of the bulk from corners which gives flatter corners. I was surprised to see that it actually worked. I have been hand sewing 1.75" double fold binding on mug rugs and it made a BIG difference with getting the corners folded. I have the same tape set up on my Bernina, only difference is my painter's tape is bright blue.
And Tartan thanks for this. I think I knew about this at one time but have forgotten LoL.
