I do something a little differently. I press a triangle into the end of each strip. Then I lay them out to sew with edges matching - no plus sign. I sew on the pressed line, press the seam open, and THEN trim the seam allowance. I even leave the selvage on, because most of it gets cut off with the seam allowance, and the little point that may be left is in the seam allowance.

I was surprised to see that it actually worked. I have been hand sewing 1.75" double fold binding on mug rugs and it made a BIG difference with getting the corners folded. I have the same tape set up on my Bernina, only difference is my painter's tape is bright blue.
