Default Advice on adding a pocket for feet on a quilt

Our son would like a pocket on the back of his lap quilt, that he could slip his feet into. He is tall 6'6" so his lap quilts were always, I thought long enough.

I was thinking that this sounds similar to the Quillow's of the past, (which I've never made a quillow and would have to look up instructions) perhaps covering 2/3 of the width of the quilt and then maybe 1/4 of the length, 20" or so deep? Do you think that is too big, not big enough?

Also, I'm trying to figure out is this, it will go to the Long Arm for the main quilt to be quilted. How do I attach the pocket after I get it back? I know I could machine sew the pocket on the bottom edge of the quilt and cover that raw edge, when binding the quilt, are there any other suggestions other than hand stitching the sides to attach to the back of the quilt?

Thanks for any help or suggestions you may have...I know I may be complicating this but I want it to be practical and useful for him.

I would machine stitch the pocket to the quilt. It should not interfere with the stitching of the quilting. Just be 3 lines of stitches of the pocket.

As with quillows, machine stitch to the quilt AFTER it's quilted. You shouldn't have a problem with that at that point. If you don't like the way it looks, take out the machine stitching and re-stitch by hand (don't recommend, you need the machine stitch strength to hold things together...). Have fun!

My only other suggestion would be to get a "release from blame" signed letter from your dear son.
When wrapped in my over sized lap quilt - if i want to go to the kitchen to make a cup of tea, i often just stand up and keep it wrapped around me. If i had this foot pocket in my quilt, i KNOW i would forget, stand up and try to walk.....and the result would NOT be pretty !!!

I have made a bunch of quillows. They are usually 45 (wof) by 60 or 72. The pocket is usually a quilted square of 18x18. This should be big enough for his feet. P

Oh my gosh! That is exactly what I was thinking, is that I would end up face first in the floor!

Hi Onalee,
My suggestion would also be to stitch it on after it is quilted.
Only other suggestion, make the pocket out of flannel, or even better, fleece to keep his feet warm because I'm assuming that is the object of the exercise.

My thought exactly! I can get tangled in a quilt even without a foot pocket! froggyintexas

Many giggles about forgetting about the pocket and the resulting sight. I shared that comment with him this AM he thought that was pretty funny too. He lives in Colorado does a lot of snow mobile activities and skiing so keeping his toes toasty is something he's looking forward to.

Many thanks to everyone for your advice! I will be using fleece and then again maybe Minky.

Thanks so much for dimensions of course making it this size will be much better than what I originally was thinking.
