Why not work with the recycled plastic felt they sell at JAF by the bolt? I made the quilt in my avatar (first quilt I ever made) with that stuff & it's really not bad. No, it's certainly not as luxurious as wool felt, but it really is pretty decent & it would give you the opportunity to practice some of the techniques & make something beautiful for your home without the enormous cost of felted wool.
