I was carrying around a very small, plain hexagon baby quilt all hand sewn that I pulled out of a pile of old linens. A woman working the sale said, "Oh, I'm so glad you are taking that. The woman here says it was her baby blanket, but she wants to sell it." I said I love old quilts. After a little more looking around, the woman who apparently was the baby this quilt was made for approached me. She said "I've been agonizing over this quilt, and decided I want to keep it." I told her, No problem, because it obviously has sentimental value to her, and everyone can make a bad decision when under stress. Then she said "...unless you want to pay $25 for it". I handed it to her and said "NO THANKS".

Can you believe the nerve??? I was stunned!!! As I paid for the other things I had pulled out, I saw her drape it over the back of a chair that was sitting there. She was obviously going to offer it for sale again. Some people!!!! Well, maybe she was under a lot of stress because of her mother's death. Anyway, I was just shocked by her behavior.

Probably the fact that she was willing to sell it to begin with says a lot. That may have just been a story to boost the "value" of the quilt. It may be one she picked up at a garage sale somewhere. Am I being a pessimist here?

let's face it, not every body treasures things like that - they get tossed out (or sold at estate sales)

I knew a lady that I loved and cherished for fifty five years. I hit some hard times but, on Christmas I was struggling to gather some extra and I made her a duster. It was darling.My mom even liked it and my mom didn't like anything I did, well she didn't even like me. When I was at her place later that week to help clean up after a lot of company, there on the garbage heap was the duster. I said do you salvage yard goods? and she said, Oh Lord no. I don't know why anyone would give me something like that. I only wear store bought things from the best boutiques......SHOOT, I snatched that duster and plunder through just to see if there was anything else in her garbage that I could put to use. Then I broke down bawling. I cried all the way across town. I never thought of her in that light again. Before she walked on water and I know she sewed for everyone for 75 years, to make ends meet, etc. You think you know someone one....huh. So, strangers aren't strange at all. Guess that makes it easier to accept their 'stuff'.

Whewwwwww, I blew that off my chest, thanks. Sorry for your experience jljack. At least you didn't get ripped off. Maybe next time you will hit the 'mother lode' .

I was at a yard sale in Texas while on vacation and spotted an old quilt that had definately seen better days. I asked the woman how much she wanted for it and she said, "$7" I said, "would you take $5?" She proceeded to tell me how her great grandmother had made the quilt and it had a lot of sentimental value to her and no, she just couldn't sell it for $5. I layed it down and took a picture of it. All I wanted it for was the pattern anyway. I just couldn't bring myself to deny this woman her heritage for a measly $7. Some people just have no class or sense.
But I'm curious too, how much was it when you first picked it up?

oh, that is so sad! I know where you're coming from though, kinda belong to that club myself. Good for you for not letting your mom & that lady kill your spirt.

A few years ago, I heard a co-worker make very disparaging remarks about a quilt that her dh's aunt made them for their wedding. She said it was ugly and that she didn't know why the aunt couldn't have bought them something useful or exchangable instead of the quilt that she will have to store for a few years before she can convince her dh to get rid of. I asked her if she considered the love and effort that went into the quilt and she said that if his aunt really loved him, she would have given them cash instead so they could get something they wanted. I completely lost respect for her. ( I wanted to call up her dh's aunt and tell her what an ungrateful spoiled brat her nephew married. :twisted: )

You have got to be kidding!!! That extra $2 would settle the sentimental value????? whooowhee, it takes all kinds to make this crazy world!
