I have sewn a little bit and made two quilt tops and 1 queen size quilt with lots of help this last year.
I have most of the tools for quilting I believe including a machine.
I am also reading books to help educate myself more and more.
Wanting to start a "Sue Bonnet Sue"(no time limit) quilt and also a "Log Cabin" quilt(finish by Christmas 2011).
I was directed that I needed to figure out what size. Ok - the size for the "Sue Bonnet Sue" will be a double.
What is the next step?
For these quilts can I use scrap fabric?
I would like to hand quilt the "Sue Bonnet Sue" and Maybe machine quilt the "Log Cabin" quilt.

Yes, you can use scrap fabric if you have enough for what you want to make.
As for the material, look at yard sales, I love Church sales and Estate sales. Look for old sheets and medical scrubs, they come in such yummy colors!!! Old men's shirts, no matter where you can find them. Ask family and friends, probably they have a lot they don't want and don't want to throw away. Tell them to throw them your way.
Old jeans makes lovely, warm and long lasting quilts. Men's flannel shirts are thick and warm too.
Good luck and keep sewing. Enjoy what you are doing, show us what you've done and feel good about what you've accomplished.

Measure the mattress, figure out how far down you want the quilt to hang all the way around. Do you want the top of the quilt to wrap around the pillows? This will determine the finished size of the quilt.

Do you want borders? How many, and how wide each? Are you wanting sashes? Then you figure out the size of your blocks.
Or you can start out with say 10" blocks and figure it all out from there... graph paper can help a lot with the planning stages.

Sometimes it is easier for a beginner to buy a pattern where all of this is figured out for you :D:D:D

the last one i did was in pastels. i used fusible interfacing/webbing on mine. then stitched by machine with a blanket stitch.

Are you meaning the "Sun Bonnet Sue" pattern? There is also a "Sweet William" boy too.
My mil used to make these. I have a flea market about 40 miles from me where they sell the kits pre-cut. I have never bought them for me but my mil loves the kits.

If you have a place close by where they make clothing sonations for a small fee then you can carry out a lot of material in a garbage bag. I am excited to see what you can do!

you will have fun making the Sue blocks. applique by hand is great. you can add all sorts of lace, etc if you wish. just figure your size blocks and add sashing strips in between the blocks to make them fit the top of the bed/mattress.

Love this quilt...I am going to b making a Sun Bonnet Sue quilt soon....going to go through my closet and start cutting shirts that I no longer wear.
