Question Help with a baby quilt

This sounds strange coming from me, but I have a strange question, so here goes:

I have a friend that wants to make a baby quilt, this will be her 1st quilt. GREAT! Yeah, another convert.. but here is the problem... she says she has in her mind a picture of what the quilt should be and it is this:

A design by my choosing, simple but complicated looking. Ok, that's right up my alley, and she wants to put 'that soft stuff' (minky) on the back.. no prob, but I talked her out of it because of the price and we are going to go with polar fleece) But then she wants to bind the quilt with satin blanket binding WITH a ruffled edge! EEAAKK!! She wants to use yarn to tie the quilt.. ok with that as well, will do a few bar tacks and then go over them with yarn.. no brainer.

I am ok with everything else, done it a million times, and I can handle the satin binding (will have to do that one myself, I can see that one coming) but ruffles. <sigh>

Here is my question to all of you, how do I do that? Do I get satin yardage? Do I use extra binding? What would you use? I know that this will not be an easy binding to do. If we were using cotton on both sides, it would be as easy as to, but we are using polar fleece on the back and with the satin sewn to one side and turned, that is 3 layers and then with the polar fleece, that seam is going to be very thick! I may be able to stitch it by machine, but most likely by hand.

What are your suggestions other than to tell her that we cant do a ruffle and just do a straight binding?

I have seen packages of the wide satin binding at fabric stores. I think I would go with that if you can get it in a colour you can use. As for ruffled satin binding, it makes me shudder just to think about trying to do that on your quilt edge. I see the exact same problems that you do. Good luck and maybe someone else will have a good solution.

Where does the ruffle go? On the inside of the binding, like a flange? Or does she want the binding to be a ruffle? Then I would buy ruffled quilt binding. Comes with a binding portion and a ruffle that goes on the outside.

I am glad that I am not the only one that sees an issue with this. Made me stop and just stare at her when she told me this.. On top of this, she is one of the office staff at work that has taken me under her wing and allowed me to be a part of the 'upper management' functions.. I gota get this one right or else.. (I don't have time for this, I have a Mystery quilt to do for everyone here!!! )

Good luck with the satin binding. I have seen some beautiful ones on BQ with ruffles and attempted it with poor results. I used a zig zag stitch to avoid pulling. Unfortunately it didn't work out for me. Perhaps others will post their hints on how to avoid that.

She wants this to be the edge/binding of the quilt. I like the idea of purchasing the binding already made, but that may not be a possibility as she is going for girly pinks and I think I may have a hard enough time just finding the binding in that color, not to mention ruffled binding.. I will see, tomorrow is shopping day.. uggg, I know I will end up making this quilt for her.

Oh yes, a zig zag is the only stitch I would use if I did it by machine.. I think this is going to drive me knutz!

Ok, here is a rendering of the quilt as created in EQ7. 40 x 40 6 inch blocks.
    What do you think?

When I did a ruffled lace binding for a baby quilt years ago I rounded the corners to prevent having to turn the premade ruffled binding. This also gives a baby quilt a softer look I think.
