Would it be too silly to suggest a girl kangaroo, for Sydney, whose GM is in Australia? I know, my brain works funny.

It has to have a kangaroo and a koala, at least. You'd be surprised what 3-year-olds understand, if you tell them what each one is. My dgd is three, and she has a terrific memory. It just takes one explanation, and she's got it. Kids are smarter than we give them credit for! Her parents can supply her the girly stuff... I prefer to provide the interesting.

A koala or a bilby can look cute and that way you could kill two birds with one stone? Why not try one with Australian wildflowers if you don't want to go for the animals?

This would be my choice, too.

I think it would mean more, it would remind her of her grandma who lives so far away in Australia.

I would go girlie or girlie plus koalas. At three she won't understand a real themed quilt. I agree with those who say make the next one for her a real Aussie quilt....

But you could throw in some florals that might be from Australia, or koalas, like some said.

I've done several I Spy quilts for little ones and never had a request for just girlie or just boy, or just pinks, etc. Kids love variety. I Spys are great fun and learning tools for matching, identifying shapes, colors, objects and critters. They are even useful as speech therapy quilts. Since the quilt is for your granddaughter i suggest you ask her parents if you feel you need to, but put in whatever you think she'd like. Sometimes adults get hung up on themes. Make what you'd like to- from your heart.

My thoughts too - It will help her get to know you / your country much different from where she is....
