Thanks for the laugh. Great on a cold winter morning --for me anyway. I have 2 Amazon parrots-of course they are inside--but my understanding is that birds don't need protection from cold temps (within reason). They can fluff their feathers and hold body heat like a layer of insulation. I know hens don't need a rooster to produce eggs. I think I'd find that annoying rooster a new home. Have heard that they can be very mean

Oh this was a fun thread to read. My grandmother would have gotten a good chuckle out of the idea of a vest for a chicken. Fun!

Brought it to my sister's attention. She said she made some for a couple of her chickens but they would tear at it.

My understanding is these 'vests' are used to prevent the roosters from tearing up the hens' backs. Roosters are very 'active' and will mount each hen in the flock multiple times a day. Their talons and spurs can do a lot of damage. An injured hen, especially one that has an open or bleeding wound, will be repeatedly attacked by not only the rooster, but the rest of the hens.

The vests I've seen we're made from a heavy canvas or rip cord material to prevent the spurs from penetrating.

I had to laugh when I first read this post! Had to call my husband to see the chickens and penguins in their sweaters...and the comment that someone posted that the rooster was in the freezer!

When people have a need, they are endlessly clever about how to create something to fix the problem.

I also laughed when I first read this post but after reading about the vests and why they are used, they make perfect sense. Now I need to meet some chickens so I can make them vests!

Ha, ha! Maybe she needs to cut the fabric on the bias to give it a bit of stretch!

To sprice: roosters aren't needed to lay unfertilized eggs (for eating), but they are necessary if you want chicks. It's a brutal activity by already filthy little creatures, but gosh if those little chicks aren't adorable after a few days -- and yummy some weeks later!

Okay between the vests for chickens and the potty pants, this thread has had me laughing.
