Some people put a vest or coat on their hens so that the rooster doesn't tear their backs up while breeding.

Mike'sgirl is right. They do not need clothes to keep warm. It started with chicken aprons, which covers their backs because roosters' spurs will rub the feathers right off their backs, especially their favorite hens.

Why not? LOL. It can't do any harm and in fact may do some good. It would be a fun project.

I think I've heard everything now. But if it's for protection, who am I to argue? Sounds like a fun project!

yep---they don't need the vests for warmth--chicken owners will put a heat lamp into the coop for that, but for protecting during breeding. I'd suggest that you think about something a little heavier duty--like a twill, canvas, etc.

I never knew any of this. I love chickens but have never been able to own any.

No, I have never made a live chicken anything. I am not sure they would like it unless it was a pet. They need to flap their wings, don't they??

they don't need them for warmth and leaving them on for more that a few days isn't good for their skin or feathers. They need access for dusting and picking.

What they were created for is to keep a rooster from tearing them up every day. Some roosters are very rough and the hen ends up with much of her back feathers torn out. They shouldn't be made out of anything heavier than cotton fabric.
They are normally called chicken or hen aprons.

speaking for myself, the rooster would meet the dutch oven and the problem is solved.
