Hi, I have started the chevron quilt from MSQC and I am just wondering about borders....do the borders have to be made with one continuous strip of fabric?? Or can I sew two or three strips together and center them along the sides and top and bottom?? My quilt will fit a double bed...

Borders can be done any way you want to do them. If you're talking about a single fabric border, it can be a single piece of fabric, or it can be pieced to form the border.

And you can do pieced borders using different fabrics.

This is great advice and you beat me to it. I have an anal quilt friend who uses length of fabric for her border pieces cuz she hates to piece her border but everything else is pieced so why not the border?

I always piece the border because I'm lousy at cutting super long strips.

I like to have one piece for the outer border. The leftover fabric is used in future quilts, either in making blocks or making narrow inner borders.

I shoot for one piece if at all possible, but for bigger quilts I have pieced them together no problem. I think the only time it would be an issue is if you have a print where you have to line up stripes or something like that.

Pieced for me . . . like everyone says ... cutting one long length of fabric ... a pain in the a$$

I have done borders both ways. Cutting a long border piece is a lot more work to cut straight.

I think pretty much the whole point of cutting one full strip for the border is so that it can be done along the selvage/straight grain of the fabric which will stabilize the top and prevent 'wavy' edges, although there are other ways to accomplish this. If I don't have enough fabric to cut l-o-n-g strips to do this, I just piece them. Or make a pieced block border.
