Need "Redo" suggestions, please.

Ok, I have this quilt that someone asked me to "remake". Her mother made it a long time ago. I have never seen one put together like this. She cut squares, folded them into HST, slipped a piece of batting into the resulting HST. She made 2 of these to form a square (like turnovers), using a zig-zag stitch to connect them. So, essentially, the HST's have a zig-zag stitch running diagonally to connect the 2 quilted HST's to form a square (that is the extent of the quilting), so it's two sided (front and back). She would like to keep the quilt only it needs to be "redone", because the zig-zag stitching is falling apart every time it is washed. Apparently, this method was a trend a few years back. So, I have no idea what to do. Do you all have any suggestions? She is open to anything at this point. Thank you in advance. :)
Red indicates zig-zag attachment, and each triangle has it's own batting.

Cool- mini QAYG! I'd like to try that!
If the "turnovers" are in good condition, and the layout is good, can you not just rip all the seams and replce them with better zigzagging?
Not understanding your question, maybe. Sorry!

I would add a backing fabric and just zigzag on top of the existing zigzagging to secure the quilt to its backing. The back will look different than it originally did, but will still have the zigzag pattern of triangles.

My first reaction was take the blocks apart and trun every other one, but since the fabric is not in good condition that is out. So how about taking bias strips to outline the triangles. That would make the zig zag area stronger,
If she wants the look changed more, I would add a border, that might help make the quilt stonger too.
