I do like the black melons; I wouldn't have thought of them myself, but they calm the center down a little bit and the rest of the colors sing. Please post your choice and let us see the finished product.

Thanks y'all for all the great advice and support. I am going with the black melons. This is my first DWR, I'm using the Marti Michell templates and so far it's going great. I tend to go totally scrappy or watery blues and greens so it's totally out of my comfort zone. She has the advice in her directions that if you go for a solid melons and centers it will accent your quilting and patterned melons and centers will accent your colors. Since I am in no way a professional quilter, I chose the pattern approach. But I can handle the black melons.

I think its great just like you have it. Go for it. Sometimes it is fun to step out of our comfort zone.

I think the black and fabrics are terrific, it will be an amazing quilt when finished.

I think what you have is great. If you want a little more brightness, you might pick a couple more shades on the lighter end of the gold as it looks on my monitor that there are some lighter shades in your print. Maybe just one brighter shade, then you would have 4 in each color group and the center one that is a perfect blend of the two.
This will be a spectacular quilt!!

I personally do not care for the black at all. I like your original better. I think the black is far too drastic a contrast.

How about a pale peach tonal or a pale batik?

I like the use of the black melons--it make both the center and the rings (which I like how you've done them) really stand out--or maybe even a dark charcoal

Here's another vote for the black "melons". It is much more dramatic with them black.
