Using contact paper for marking a quilt???
I was just reading where some people mark their quilting pattern on clear contact paper, adhere that to the quilt, then stitch on the paper following the lines. Does anyone do this??? I can see where it would prevent marking the quilt, but isn't it difficult to stitch through?

I donot know what contact paper is. I had a border to do and a long thin border. I purchased some izal toilet paper ( it is very stiff not soft) and drew the pattern onto that plus a corner, then pinned on the quilt. I then machined over. The lines. This was very easy and did a very good job. Could not use twice but. Paper was cheap anyway.
Not tried it for larger areas only width of a toilet roll

I once took a hand quilting class with Bettina Havig, and this is exactly what she does. The clear contact paper is cut in the shape of what you wish to quilt, like a leaf, for example. Then the leaf is placed ontop of the quilt and handquilted around the edges. Once you are finished, it just lifts off, and can be used again several times before there is too much cotton fuzz on the sticky side for it to stay in place well. The advantages of this method are that you don't need to mark the quilt top, and the contact paper is very inexpensive for a roll, which provides alot of plastic for designs to be cut out of. It works very well.

the contact paper is not sewn through- you stitch beside the edges- using it as a (guide) so you can lift it off- move it- use it a number of times before it doesn't work any more- you can do the same thing with freezer paper if the white will work instead of clear.

I stitch BESIDE contact paper and THROUGH Glad press & seal. I do simple shapes like hearts and stars with the contact paper. The press & seal you can use to mark a design on it and stitch through it but in tight designs it can be a little hard to remove. I sometimes use tweezers to get the little pieces out of the stitching.
