If it runs (and it almost surely will!) you got a great deal. As for servicing, take it to the Bernina guy if he has been in the business for a long time. If he has only service machines since the fully electronic ones came in, you can get just as good of service from a good "old sewing machine guy". This machine is a strictly mechanical one. Enjoy it!

No, it doesn't have one. Only the computer ones do. That is why I bought the 1530. I think I played with the stitch lingth on #4 or #8 and used two threads.

I bought a BERNINA 830 when they first came out in the '70's and used it for many years. I gave it to my sister when I bought an 1130. I used it to make bridal wear, draperies, clothing of all kinds. If this is what you bought, you have a real jewel of a machine.

Yes! Please take to a Bernina service tech, my recent purchase of a 830 was a dud. While the machine still worked, the tech found evidence that the motor was a fire hazard the cam was broken and the wire brushes needed replaced. His advice was it was not worth fixing.
Good Luck! Hope your deal turns out sweeter than mine!

Good luck with your Bernina. I have a 1530 and I love it. Yours is an old work horse and it will last forever, barring any negligence on the part of the old owners. As others have said, it is best to take it to a Bernina trained technician, even if it means you have to drive a few extra miles. If it is far away, take some friends and make a day out of it, visiting quilt shops on the way over and the way back.

Sorry, Nora B, but the 1020 doesn't have a blanket stitch. The little stitch looks like a blanket stitch, but it's a slanted overlock stitch. I traded in my 1030 just so I could get the blanket stitch on my 230.

Hi Amyjo,
I work part-time at the Bernina store in Minot! You got a great deal. The 830 was my first Bernina machine purchased in 1972. Have upgraded since but the 830 is a workhorse! Rest assured the repairman at the Minot Bernina store knows what he is doing. He is often backed up and you may have to wait to get it back. I have been on vacation and am catching up on e-mail, so I don't know what the back-log looks like right now. Please introduce yourself when you come in.
