I agree with Dunster. This makes it less noticeable.

I like the cornerstone idea. Gives an extra punch to it.

My thinking is a pieced quilt is full of seams so why try to hide one seam?

I piece sashing all the time. Usually I have only so much of a fabric I want to use and I have to get every inch to use the quilt. So piece away in my book.

Sometimes piecing is unavoidable. I would try to piece it in from the edge if at all possible.

I hate dealing with long strips of sashing. My preference is to sash each block as I go along then when I assemble the blocks the sashing is built in!

You're quilting! you can do whatever you want! I have done it and none of the folks who were given the quilt complained.

You'd need to piece it any way if the quilt length is 45 and the fabric strip is 44. There's a little thing called 1/4" seams that will shorten the sashing. If it bothers you, put a contrasting corner stone in at each end of the sashing to make it fit. One other thing to do that is fairly easy, is to add a rectangular strip on each end of all the sashings. use one of the fabrics in the quilt. it looks cute. The rectangular strips should butt up to each other when you have them sewn on.

That's how I've done it on a few of the quilts that had sashing, including the one in my avatar... but I believe many of the others have had cornerstones.

One thing not mentioned so far: if you have to put a seam where there shouldn't be one, be sure and press the seam open. Seems like a little thing, but a seam pressed to one side has a little bump. When it's open, it's almost invisible.

I find that if you have to piece sashing, try to do it diagonally (as with binding) and stagger the piecing if you have to do it in several rows. It is less noticeable.
