Okay. Hands up I was stupid. I have just recently completed three applique quillows. Yes I used heat and bond. Yes I had a new Iron. No they don't like each other! Does anyone have a good suggestion of how to get the brown gooey gunky stuff off the non stick sole plate of my new iron? All suggestions gratefully received. (There did seem to be enough heat and bond on the fabric to adhere it to the background. I just think the mischief fairy was at work again. I was sure I was being careful!!!!)

I have used a damp dryer sheet to clean gunk off the bottom of my iron before. Seems to work pretty well.

As far as preventing this from happening again, maybee you can cover your work with a light piece of fabric? a towel? I don't know. Have never used heat and bond before, but have used iron on thing to T-shirts. covering your work with a towel is a must for most iron-on projects.

Use parchment paper to put over your iron-on-applique. The extra goo will stick to the paper and protect your iron. You can use 'Iron Off' to clean your iron. I bought some yesterday at WM.

last time I did any type of fusible applique, silly me tried to applique the fabric to the iron instead of to the background (piece was upside down :-(). Of course I was at my mom's using HER iron. She told me to take a large piece of wax paper, fold in half a couple of times (so it's 4 or 8 layers thick, but still bigger than the iron plate). Lightly iron the was paper for a few seconds and then wipe iron with a clean hand towel. Repeat several times.

Thank you ladies. I will give them all a try if I can get the products here in the UK. However I am off to my neighbours to ask about wax paper..... I could kick myself really. I did use parchment paper believe it or not but kind of forgot what side had the sticky on.... that's when all the trouble began - shoulda used the old iron eh?

Stovetop cleaner (a little) on a damp cloth run over the sole of the cool iron and then wiped off works!
