I did this until I discovered spray basting. Now I am hooked, and spend a lot more time at the machine than I do getting there.

If you go to JAF or a carpet store, they will give you tubes that the fabric is rolled on. Works like the boards but they are free. I use the tubes out of batting. some are 60" and can be taped together. I use them and basting spray.

I've primarily hand quilted, and our little group is nearly ready to place our first quilt on an old 2-roller floor frame for us to hand quilt. I pin-basted 2 quilts for hand quilting, which worked fairly well, but won't work for the floor frame. Those videos were a Godsend!
