Can anyone please tell me how to cut the fabric straight for a quilt?. I always cut it crooket.

I align the correctly-folded fabric with the lines on the rotary cutting mat and then align my ruler with the lines on the mat instead of the edge of the fabric.

If you are using a longer (24") ruler, you need to cut for a short distance, 12 or so inches. Stop, reposition your hand by moving forward about 12", closer to the opposite end, and continue cutting.

Also, there are several "grippie" dots that can be stuck on the back side of your ruler which help hold in place while cutting. These dots are available to most sewing stores and most catalogs.

I am not one to promote gizmos, but I have one of those lipped rulers that has become a favorite. It aligns perfectly with the squared edge of the mat, and STAYS PUT. If I'm not mistaken, the brand is Olippa, and cost is comparable to other rulers I own. I still use my old standard 6x24" for anything not requiring square cuts, but for 90 degree perfection, this is my tool of choice.

Hi , I'm Ann. I was having trouble cutting straight strips too. I had bought a cut and press board , well on closer inspection I found there was a hump right in the center ! Defective I guess ! After using another cutting mat I didn't have much of a problem. I hope this helps . Ann

I saw a pair of sisors that had a red lazer light that would shine down the material, I think it was in keepsake quilting catalog. I thought they looked interesting.

If you're getting a "v" in the middle of your strip, perhaps you don't have your fabric aligned properly......not sure if I can explain this.....fold your fabrics wrong sides together, selvedge to selvedge.....then slide the side closest to you right or left until the two pieces lay flat together without a "wow" in them......then lay this flat on your cutting board.....straighten the left side of your fabric & then slice your strips......I'm sure there must be a video out there on this technique...have you tried searching on youtube?
