My DH bought home a surprise for me! He had purchased a piece of every precut fabric Walmart was selling. He works in the garden center and found out that the store had put all the precuts on sale so they could the fabric dept back in. I thought it would be funny to make him a lapquilt to remind him of his purchase!!!
Now to my problem, the two pieces that came together was a batik and a tie dye; and there was 1 yd. of each. I was able to get 10 blocks and the smaller pieces of the 12 and pieces that were required in the pattern. I'm going to do a slightly different layout of the blocks, to get the length but use wider borders to get overall width and lenght; than what the pattern calls for. The pattern is from the called Twist and Turns by Suzanne Mc Neill.
I've never used batik/tie dye fabrics in a quilt, do you use solids for a border? I was thinking about using three varying widths of fabric to make border, something in a narrow width and then two more that were wider. There's so many colors in the batik that I'm sure I could find solids that would blend with them.
Sure appreciate the help, I'm really stumped as to what to use!!! Chris

I always wait until I have the blocks assembled before I make the decision on borders. Sometimes the flavor of a quilt isn't quite what you imagined and by adding just the right border you can fix the flavor to what you originally intended.

Very pretty fabric! God bless your hubby! :)
I would definitely choose a navy for one of the borders!
You've got so many colors to choose from! Greens, yellows, browns! Please show us the quilt when it is finished! I'm sure your hubby will love it! :)

I also wait until the top is made to pick border/s and even the back of a quilt. 'Course I am no expert and have only been quilting about seven years.... still a beginner.

I'm seeing a narrow purple border and then a wider border of the multi-colored batik. yummy

I treat a multi colored batik like yours, the same as any other multi colored print  Pick your colors as you have in the past :D:D:D

Mimom, that's a good suggestion. I've exxperienced what you wrote about in another quilt. Luckily when I got the quilt all pieced I had something here at the house that worked better than I had originally thought would. It's amazing how the look of fabrics change when they are pieced together. Chris

If it were me, I would wait until all the blocks were pieced together and then think about what would be a good choice for the border. I personally find it difficult to choose beforehand.

Wonderful!!! If you have a Hobby Lobby near by, they sell marbly blended solids that I have fallen in love with!!! Here is an example...

    http://shop.hobbylobby.com/store/ite...?ItemId=147933

    http://shop.hobbylobby.com/search/de...entName=Fabric

It comes in all colors, green, yellow, orange, red, black, blue, purple, etc. :)
