When is a "Thread" too old?

When I first joined this board, if a question was posed that had already been discussed, sure as can be someone would post a link with the comment "that's already been answered, please read the discussion here". While it always made me feel like a slacker because I hadn't done my homework - just gone and posted my question - with the overwhelming number of people asking the same thing over and over again now, I kind of miss those reprimands.
