My daughter got a long haired yellow cat and he was all matted from being outside and not taken care of. She had him shaved all but his head. Guess that's as close to a lion as I'll ever get.lol. I had the same thought about the black sateen finish. Thinking I might go with white but then that shows the dirt. Maybe purple would be good?

Woot Woot! My book is ordered and I have decided how I'm going to deal with the applique process! I've even decided where the finished project will hang (maybe in 10 years or so, LOL). Now on to the fabric selection process! What am I thinking, starting another project when I have so many UFOs? Must be that I have subscribed to the belief that UFOs make the world go 'round and keep quilters happy and occupied!

Beady, I am going to be using fat quarters and will also be looking at my larger scraps. The book does suggest to have "a large variety of 100% cotton fabric in different colors and values. Large pieces pieces of fabrics are not needed". I would imagine anyone who plans to enlarge the blocks may have to consider larger pieces of fabric ?
For those who have concerns about black background have a look at google images as examples of other coloured backgrounds can be found.

Thanks, Kindleaddict! My book will be here Tuesday, but I just can't wait! Ha ha! I've been pouring through the 200 posts from the quilt along on this from a couple of years ago, but hadn't found anything about jelly rolls yet.

I suspect you could use jelly rolls as long as the pieces are small enough to fit on the roll width. I don't think there will be any particular advantage to using them and I could see how it might be a little inconvenient to try to trace the template onto the jelly roll. I think I would hesitate because Jelly Rolls are so expensive, I personally would want to use them for strip piecing rather than cut them up for applique. However, I see no reason why they wouldn't work if that it what you want to use.

Hey all its December First and time to start planning! If you don't have your supplies prepped, lets get rolling. Wash and iron those fabrics (if you are a member of the Prewash Sneeches), decide if you are going to enlarge your patterns and to what size, and remember to increase the size of your background blocks accordingly! Check your supplies of thread, template plastic, and whatever else you use for your preferred applique method.
I'm waiting to get my backing fabric in the mail, should only be a week or so. And in the meantime, I think I'm going to run the calculations for a 9 inch finished block, as I would like my completed quilt to be a little larger.
