    Default Tin Foil Packets

    We have been camping and tried something new. Each camper gets a tin foil packet. Then we usually have chicken or fish in pieces or filet or breast. Then we add some veggies like onion, red pepper, lemon, garlic for aromatics and can add green beans or carrots etc. On top of that you add your spices and salt and pepper. We use olive oil but butter is great too. Then you can add your paprika or lemon pepper or even curry etc. Whatever you want. We have only cooked on a gas grill, but you can do this on the coals too.
    Along with that we chop up potatoes, coat with olive oil and salt and pepper and put a large tin foil packet of those on too. These are done amazingly fast and I think because the heat is so high the flavors are amazing. Also because all the flavors stay cooked in. I highly recommend anyone to try this.

    We are going to continue doing it at home. An easy way for individualized tastes to cook at the same time and it is absolutely delicious.

    Anyone else tried this - have any tips? I love doing it.

    Funny But YES as a kid we did this but we dug small pits in the dirt and made small fires let them burn down to coals and then put the foil in on top covered with more dirt went for a walk came back and ate!

    Hint ... use foil pans (take out containers, pie plates etc.) as they are less fragile. Then wrap with your foil!

    Potatoes ... I;d be adding some onions to those! and/or some pre-cooked bacon (are there ever any leftovers?)(
    Those packets are a good way to use leftover potatoes from previous meals!

    Lemon slices with the fish is really nice ... and for me, more onion slices too!

    And now you have me drooling ... ane green with envy!

    We did this with Girl Scouts. Once we went camping in the winter (in a cabin) and that is what the girls had planned for this first night. Figured build the fire and put the packets on. Two people tend the fire and the rest can be setting up. Wrong. First we had to shovel the firepit and melt the snow so we had a bucket of water. Not sure where we thought the fire might spread to but rules are rules. It was so cold we couldn't really tell when the packets were hot. They put the frozen fries on the bottom, onions and carrots on top and some sort of meat. Not sure if it was chicken or frozen burger. They sure tasted good that night though. Everyone was so hungry after all the extra work. Always a good memory though.hehe

    Yes! These are great! We also make them in the oven in the winter, just putting the packets into a large roasting pan in a 400° oven. I like to use McCormicks veggie seasonings in the packets, along with thick slices of zucchini and yellow squash to go with the onions and red potatoes.

    It has been so long since I have thougth about these -- we called them foil dinners. I will have to try this again sometime. Thanks for the reminder.

    just last night I had a big wedge of purple cabbage out of my garden with a slice of bacon wrapped around it and wrapped in foil on my barbecue. It was wonderful!!

    Yup, we called them hobo packs in Girl Scouts... a lonnnnnnnnnnnng, long time ago. Good though!

    You can now buy no-stick aluminum foil - the best thing for these. Also, if you wrap your food in foil, then a layer of wet newspaper, and another layer of foil, they will be protected enough to just throw into the fire. The wetness of the paper provides some inner steaminess and when it's dry, the food is done.
