2 machimes, both Bernina. My main machine weighs 34 lbs. and stays home! My smaller, lighter machinr goes to classes, and group sewing meetings. My guild makes charity quilts and quilts of valor.

Plastic canvas. I have been using it for years since washing is no problem. Also, very cheap and easy to cut to size. Just don't use your good fabric scissors!

If you use the mat consistently, for the whole project,it won't matter. If doing a guild project, for charity quilts, use a ruler as that will, hopefully, make the blocks close to the same size.
