Yes, timing IS everything. After a good dinner, with a glass of wine and a cake for dessert and some ice cream on it with a splash of creme de mint over the chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream, THEN it might be a good time to tell him.

On the other hand, why bother, just tell him that son did "Something" to it and suddenly it started working. Son must have inherited his mechanical genius from him.

I'm sure he has had a similar experience with his cars! Just tell him his son is following in his footsteps being able to fix things!

...then get him a beer!

Hard to tell You may want to spare him the embarassment to know that he could not fix it but his son could, but you don't want to take credit away from your son. What a predicament you have!

Shucks, when my Singer stopped working and no one to repair it, I saw an ad for an older model an hour's drive away ($30). DH went with me, we hauled it home in the backseat, set up in living room and found it to be a really nice little straight stitch machine. This spring I decided to put the fancy Singer to rest and unfastened it from the table. It was then that I discovered the electric cable was disconnected. Put it in--machine works.
DH enjoyed a good laugh at my expense. He knows how much I like the 1920s bargain model we hauled home. I love having an upstairs-downstairs sewing option.

Just like mine

What a great story! It sounds to me like he wouldn't be upset at all, since he was nice enough to look for another one.
And I like the genius son story- make sure he knows that he takes after Dad lololol :D
