You can tell him and if he complains hyour answer should be You went online and purchased the new one for me, I didn't ask you to, but I certainly appreciate your kindness and being so thoughtful.
Always good to have a backup machine anyway.

Please be sure to tell him, and also tell him how wonderful he was to buy you a new machine! He will be proud of your son, and a little praise and thanks go a long way. (I know)
Make his favorite meal, or make him a quilt and tell him how much you love and appreciate him. ;)
