A hot toddy....shot of whiskey, squirt of lemon and drizzle of honey. I use a short glass and put in the microwave for 30 or 40 seconds. Curl up on the couch under a quilt and sip. After 2 you won't care if you have a cold or not. lol
Really, the fumes do help clear your head etc.
Don't drink or eat dairy products....it produces phlegm.

I do the SinuCleanse. It gets the bacteria out and eliminates the drainage that causes the sore throat...

Vicks and my husband's white tube sock around my neck! Edie

Hey, it works - three days, sore throat gone and while you have the sore throat it warms your neck and just feels better.

According to my dad, who would be 99 if he was still w/us, you should do the following:

Make a bunch of "cough" medicine (hot water, honey and as much Jim Beam as you can stand), climb into bed with one boot outside the covers. When you see 3 boots, you can stop drinking. When you wake up the cold and cough should be gone. Yep, he kidded a lot!

I use zinc throat lozenges at the first sign of a sore throat or cold. They really work for me, so it does not develop into a cold.

Just a precaution: Years ago my great-grandmother told my Mom to quadruple her vitamin C intake for a bad cold. As a result Mom became allergic to vitamin C to the point that she couldn't even have a citrus twist on the side of a glass or she'd break out in boils on her neck. It took years for the sensitivity to abate, and even today she has to be careful to not have much citrus in one day. So I do hope you'll be careful.
    My best cold remedy:
    A) Wash your hands often! This alone will greatly help to prevent infection
    B) Gargle with warm salt water
    C) Take Echinacea and zinc lozenges
    D) At the first sign, PUT IT TO BED. Hard to do when one feels one can still function, but the cold will pass faster, your friends and co-workers won't be exposed so will surely thank you, and you'll get lots of sympathy!
    E) Keep hydrated.
    F) Chicken noodle soup

Ginger tea made from fresh ginger root. I take a hand of ginger and slice it thinly (about 2 big handfulls). Add it to a quart of water and simmer until the water is half.

The more concentrated it is the better for cutting through the nasty post nasal drip I get with allergies also.
