You can test scraps of the fabric to see if they bleed or not. Get some clear plastic cups, fill with water, and drop in a square of fabric. Let sit for a day and see if any dye leaks into the water. Rub the damp fabric against your white background fabric to see if any dye transfers that way. If the red fabric passes these tests, it is pretty safe to wash your quilt.

It's important when you wash a quilt for the first time to use lots and lots of water to dilute any dye bleeds that may occur. I take mine to the laundromat and use their largest front loader along with Synthrapol to keep any loose die particles suspended in the water.

edit: I think that most of The issues with bleeding fabric are due to quality control issues in the factories.
