BOTH! art tends to be lots of people's hobbies---my mother is a commercial artist- managed to raise 6 kids with her art- she also enjoys painting as her hobbie-
there is a difference between an art quilt and a traditional quilt- but i make alot of traditional quilts that people look at and tell me---wow- you are an artist! no reason for there to be a difference-
if a degree will help you further your hobbie why not? same as taking any other classes to further your interest- learn new techniques- color theory---lots of things- if you have time and $$--and the desire- why would it matter if it's to further your hobbie- or just because you have an interest- or make it a career choice??

I say both, just like there are levels of artists in other mediums there are in quilting. My "art" may never grace a museum, however, is appreciated by the ones I choose to share it with.

I could not disagree with this more!! If anybody has the opportunity to get a degree in something they love they should do it!! Raising your level of knowledge is ALWAYS a good thing!!

I see it as both, but it really depends on how you see it in your life...It is an art if you want to study further to imporve your work....for me it is a hobby, because of how it fits into my life...

I had this discussion with an artist who says quilting is a craft, not art, but I disagree depending on the quilt project. I've seen alot of quilts which I consider beautiful art, not just a craft or hobby.

Yes, I agree it depends on the project.
Crafters are higly skilled people as well, and deserve our respect alongside artists.
The terms quilt artisans and quilt artists do sound pretty nice.

It is an artful hobby. I have a great quote that suits...
"A man who works with his hands is a laborer
A man who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman
A man who works with his hands, head and Heart is an artist"
    Need I say more?
