    Try copying it onto paper, and then onto muslin to see how it works. You can make alterations from the muslin and still have a pattern

    It does work I made one for a wheel chair bound lady and the christmas tree skirt pattern only needed a bigger neck opening She wanted it out of fleece so I quilted 3 layers together I planned on making me one for when I go nite fishing

    All I could think of while reading your post, was an old episode of Designing Women.
    Bernice, the ol' crazy woman, came over to show off her new skirt, while wearing it. She had gotten it for a gift. It was a Christmas tree skirt!

    (Nevermind me, I was hit in the head)

    Sounds like a classic cloak pattern to me. I like jeaninmain's idea of velcro.

    That might be a good idea. How about backing it with fleece ? You might not have to use batting.
