    Default quilt design

I used up these wonderful polka dot charm squares that I received from my secret pal during a monthly swap on this board (thank you!). I absolutely love polka dots! I turned each one into a 3d pinwheel (4 inch finished pinwheel square), then put them randomly together in an untraditional non gridded sort of way.

How would you quilt this? I do not want to quilt over the actual pinwheels, so I can keep the 3d look. I attached a few options, but am open to more ideas! the first keeps the angular feel with the lightning shapes and is filled with pebbles. the other two give it a sort of ribbon-y feel, one with long lines and occasional loops, and the last with smaller segments similar to mctavishing.

I couldn't relate to any of the designs you created. They all seem to compete with the pinwheels instead of enhance them. I found this picture using ..and the heavy meander quilting around the first 2 rows of pinwheels make them pop out. They are the star and not just part of the chorus. It could be pebbles or anything that is round and small. https://www.bing.com/images/search?v...RST&ajaxhist=0

https://www.bing.com/images/search?v...8,10,18&sim=11 This is another one with heavy quilting. There are several pics with almost no quilting and some with the more ribbony like your first designs. This might help with your decision.

Of the three, I like the one on the left the best.

I like the more curved choices, #2 and #3. I think the third is the better of those two. It creates the illusion of breeze that is created by the little pinwheels.

It was a toss up between #2 & #3. After looking back and forth several times I decided I like #3 the best it flows much better and the curves somehow remind me of leaves and it gives some life to the swirling pinwheels.

I like#2 the best because the little circles sort of reflect the dots.

Lovely top! If you match the thread to the background fabric, any of the designs would look good. My favourite would be the lines of wind moving the pinwheels.

My personal favorite is the third one. I like the simplicity of the first one, but it is a design that falls into a contemporary or modern category and therefore less to my liking. The second one falls in between my first two comments. Whatever you decide will look great. I really like your 3-d pinwheels and I think the recipient will too.

This is exactly what I was going to say, and the picture Barb linked to was the first thing that popped into my head when I imagined how I'd quilt it. I agree - you want the pinwheels to be the star, and the best way to accomplish that is to quilt something small and non-distracting in the negative spaces.
