Davis made a lot of machines - which particular model are you interested in?

I'm not really sure ... I just found out about the Davis Sewing company and since my last name is Davis, I thought it would be neat to own one. The treadles look awesome! I haven't seen portable Davis in person so I don't know much about the portable. I would like one that works and I can use, not just a show piece. Thanks for any info. Erin

Davis was a good company in it's day - just make sure to get one with all the pieces so you don't end up hunting around for a shuttle or cover plates. Sometimes the only way you can get them is by finding another machine to buy.

I have a vertical feed Davis - it does not have feed dogs, the needle moves forward and back. Davis made a lot of the more traditional vibrating shuttle models too.

They work fine with proper basic service and some require long non standard needles. Best bet is too find a specific model in ebay or your local Craigs List that you would consider purchasing. Not difficult for anyone desiring to sew with one of these machines to do so by asking questions and searching the internet. Parts for these machines such as shuttles, bobbins and needles, are available. Most machines marked Davis are of the Vertical Feed type. National SMCo also made an electric Davis machine. Davis went out of buisness in 1924.

Good Luck

Here is a picture of my Davis Hand Crank (original) . I also have two Davis Vertical Feeds. I love them all. The handcrank is in a table with wheels so I can use her anywhere. She has since been cleaned and oiled, etc. A dream. My go to machine.

I think that’s the first Davis Handcrank that I’ve seen. I like it! Thanks for posting it. I’m a handcrank nut anyway, and just can’t get enough of them.
