I'm not really sure ... I just found out about the Davis Sewing company and since my last name is Davis, I thought it would be neat to own one. The treadles look awesome! I haven't seen portable Davis in person so I don't know much about the portable. I would like one that works and I can use, not just a show piece. Thanks for any info. Erin

Davis was a good company in it's day - just make sure to get one with all the pieces so you don't end up hunting around for a shuttle or cover plates. Sometimes the only way you can get them is by finding another machine to buy.
I have a vertical feed Davis - it does not have feed dogs, the needle moves forward and back. Davis made a lot of the more traditional vibrating shuttle models too.

Here is a picture of my Davis Hand Crank (original) . I also have two Davis Vertical Feeds. I love them all. The handcrank is in a table with wheels so I can use her anywhere. She has since been cleaned and oiled, etc. A dream. My go to machine.
