I'm thinking of bidding on a Singer 301 with what the seller says looks like a purplish magic marker stain on the bed. What would be the chances of removing it?

Regular spray lysol takes marker/pen/ink/dye off of almost any hard surface. I would check to make sure it doesn't ruin the paint because it's likely to need to sit for a minute, but it will do the job.

my DH has easily removed a bright red marker from a Pfaff metal box I bought off ebay. He used Hoppe's #9 gun cleaner. He uses it to clean machines also.

I used rubbing alcohol to remove marker from a machine I got at Goodwill, though it was on a plastic part. Not sure how it would interact with the paint on a 301.

I have used a dab of nail polish remover - just on a soft paper towel and rub the spot off - not pour it directly on.

DH uses the Bore Cleaner. He got on the web site to figure out what it was, and now he's got a few others he wants to try out.

I use a dry erase pen.

Doodle all over the sharpie marks, then wipe it off like you would any dry erase mark.

I've removed from Computers, Sewing machines and all sorts of things this way. The finish on the 301 isn't as delicate as the finishes on the older black ones (which you should never use alcohol on - it will remove the shellac), but I would still test somewhere inconspicuous. It's also possible that the marker may have seeped in a bit. If that's true, you'll get some not all of it off.
