Hi Mousie...
Can you please call back the repair shop and tell them to check with you before repairing. This way it he doesn't do work without your OK. You will be able to talk to the repair man and understand what he thinks is best for your FW. When talking to him try no to be excited that it is a FW and that it's just another vintage machine. In other words, downplay it.
Tink says to say hi to you, too.

Anything under $300 is fair, if it works well. The repair is labor to get the oxide off and then see what it needs as far as sewing. Ifyou had to buy the machine, you are looking at $200 and up, possibly over $300. Does it have attachments? Sounds like may have been in a flood. There are new cases available, if the old one is too far gone. Parts are still available. You have done a great thing by saving the machine. After the repair, it will have value and you could always sell, but you probably won't want to.

I insisted on being called before repair work is done.
I'm getting the feeling that some think 150.00 on this machine
is a lot?
They have a standing rule that all estimates/checking machine out etc.
is 99.00 out of the gate.
I'll downplay it from here, bc I did let those two ladies know it meant
a lot to me. thanks and hi to Tink!

thank you, Donna.
I have lots of attachments.
DD says it was in the back room of an old house,...no insulation.
Basically, the condensation got it.
Case is roughed up on edges but not too bad.
No, I won't sell this machine. I'll love it to death, but I'll probably
go before it does, lol

It's runs $75-$100 around here, but that's usually applied to the service or repair. One shop that's closed now wanted $135 just to look at my serger. I said no thanks and traded a Singer 401 to someone else to service the Beast, an ancient 1982 Consew 94 Tuffylock. It was my first serger and I didn't know a thing about them at the time.

Joe

you know, I wanted to !eek! when they first told me
I thought, "but you haven't really done anything at that point!"
Hmmm...I might be about to learn a life lesson here, but one thing
I do know, is the owner/repair guy does know how to do his job.
Apparently he is quite proud of it.
(maybe the fw fairies will shine on me and it won't be too bad...one
can hope.)
