Hi I just joined this group. I collect antique sewing machine(Mostly Singers). I'm a member of Treadle On and love to sew with my treadles and other old machines.

Hope you will enjoy this group as much as we all do. Billy does a great job of teaching us all about vintage machines and through his tutes on how to rip apart and clean our machines. Charlee is also 'sew' knowledgeable in teaching us about many, many things about machines and attachments. She's the expert for sure on attachments. Glad to meet you. :-D |

Somehow I missed your 2nd addition of your tutes until this morning. Just came back from the store with 'most' of the things I need to begin cleaning when I get a machine torn down. Had to go to 2 stores to get kerosene. Neither store had the Scott's Liquid Gold in any form. :?: :?: I realize that kerosene was written to use for cleaning machines in some of the older Singer manuals. But, in 2010, aren't there other more easily available cleaning products that would not damage the decals and such? I am a 'why' person, I'd just like to know for my own noggin'. :thumbup: :thumbup: I still have to redo the case and I am planning to convert this machine to a handcrank so I have a few more tutorials and a little more time to put into it before I call it finished. But for a "Junker" machine I think it turned out REALLY nice!! As far as the cleaners I would think they have something out there that is just as good but I have not found it nor has anyone else that restores the machines. If they have they are keeping the product a "sqeakrit" and not saying anything about it. Did you check you local Kroger Grocery store for the liquid gold? Mine carries it but then it might be a regional thing for them who knows. Billy |
OK, I came home from the auction with BOTH sewing machines.. How can you leave them there when they go for so little. I got a Red Eye Treadle for $20. and a Little Black portable electric for $12. The serial number on the little black one is A31C3227 I didnt find any with double letters in the online list. Anyone know how to look this one up? It is not a full size, more like a 3/4 size machine. and there is no foot pedal nor any place to plug one in that I can see. It has a dome or bent wood top. And underneath the machine I found 6 thimbles. One gold, two silver and the rest regular steel.
Any info on the weird serial number would be appreciated. |
I have my mother's Singer Treadle machine; she got from a dear old friend's mother. It has the original instruction book dated 1903. Also has the bobbins, etc., accessories that came with it. I have never used it. (I'm getting on and I got it from my mom about 1980). It has six small drawers, three on each side, each intricately carved. I keep thinking I will "restore" it but don't get around to it.

Not only do I preserve and restore them I am also in the middle of a research I am doing for the NeedleBar about being able to date and trace the Japanese machines back to the manufacturer and not the company that badged them. I have TONS of company documents and archived records from several of the Japanese companies and I have managed to break into some new territory about the subcontracting of the machines to other countries. So if I am not in my Shop here I am in the books trying to solve more mysteries!! Please feel free to post photos of all of you machines and tell us about them! We are all family here and nobody is a stranger!!!! Billy |

Hi Purplefiend! (love that handle, btw!) I just joined Treadleon...looks to be an interesting and well informed bunch! I've been going to post there, but not until I check with my brother...he's a trucker, and I'm pretty sure that he can move machines for us! (Just got to make sure he doesn't mind!)

I have several old Singers and am looking for a Singer treadle now. I have 2 featherweights We find them cheap at sales or even free sometimes and clean them up and they have all been awsome machines so far. I can't wait to read this whole thread. Judy in Ohio |
