Default Red Eye help

I have been offered a Red Eye for $30. I have seen it and it is in ok shape. It is missing the throat plate and is really dirty. It is electric and the owner said it works that she tried it. Would it work without the plate on? What do I do? I keep thinking it is cheap or is it?

The "stabber thingy" will go up and down without the plate but I'd count on it needing a cleaning and basic servicing. $30 seems OK if the decals are good and you do the work but would get expensive if it had to go to the shop. The missing plate will run $5-$20 depending on whether you get a copy or original part. I'd much prefer to put the time and effort into the Davis

Thank you Jon.
The Davis will be my first project for sure. I just told the girl I will take the Singer for sure and she is letting me have it for $25. I just love that machine. I'm sure I could resell it for that price. Keep an eye on me so I keep enough room for hubby and me.

You can get slide plates from sew-classic - they aren't new but the machine would work again. I like my perfectly imperfect redeye machines. I wonder if tattoos look that good on girls when they get that old.....

Ha! Miriam - based on my old skin, I would venture a guess of No!!!! I got a repro slide plate for my hand crank and it works fine.
