Nancy, if one screw was sticking out further than the other and there was play in the assembly, it is slightly out of time. By you tightening everything up, it probably got it closer to dead on and that's why the stitching is better. Why don't you try timing it yourself? In this case, I really would doubt you have to worry about anything other than the bobbin assembly as it sounds like it just came loose. This is the most simple of machines to do and it sounds like you only need to move the hook a hair and you'd nail it. You're not going to break anything and it will give you more experience. If you can do the 319, you can do a FW. If you can't get it right after giving it a go, then bring it to Cathy.

Nancy, Call me. I'm available to help.

Cathy and Candace I took the bed off the machine, plate off again - removed the feed dogs, checked the ratio of needle hook. It looks right to me. The eye of the needle comes by right when the hook can pick up the thread. I tweaked it a little, checked the screws - one screw appears to stick out further than the other one. There is a little tiny play in the assemby area but not much. Anyway, I put it mostly back together and now it stitches 90% of the time with no skips; but, out of 8 about 18" seams - I got 5 skips - so it is very sporadic now. Before it was skipping a lot - so whatever I have done has helped but not solved the problem!
Cathy, I hate to bug you when you are trying to move, but can you take a break and just look at it tomorrow? If not, I will give it back the way it is - which, is much better than before when it was skipping every few stitches! I will understand if you are too busy - I hate to even ask you right now.

Thrilled to bits to read a blog from this country (am I the only person on this thread to know exactly where "any fule kno" comes from?) but also very miffed that Sid and Elsie aren't near enough for me to drop in on them. Perhaps I should take a wide detour next time I visit my brother.
All is quiet in big skool comon room as we digest our jamie oliver-aproved dinner. I am reklining while a junior tick do my eng. prep for me or coarsework as we now call it in my case it is often very COARSE indeed ha ha. Basil fotherington-tomas is reding the newspaper he is a wet.
"Did you kno that from next year, good writing will count for up to 12 per cent of the gcse english grade?" he ask. "wotever" I repli (all the new bugs sa this i kno not why). "Do this notion not fill you with DREAD, olesworth?" enquire fotherington-tomas gently. "Not at all. It is quite rite that the youth of toda should write the queen's english propperly. How else are we to make the empire grate eh?"
fotherington-tomas look thortful, as well he mite. Personaly i hav nothing to fear, for when the english master's eye fall upon my composisions he shuder as if posesssed by spirit of xtacy.
"it is just nigel that your speling is somewot CREATIV. While I admire your daring refusal to conform I am conserned that it ma count against your brite future among the litterati."
"Wouldst thou pitty me, fotherington-tomas, wouldst thou O thou clot?" I demand, buzzing my copy of hamlet at his conk. "At least i spel better than shaksper."

Does anyone own a Kenmore 158? Can't find much info on it. Thanks if you do and thanks if you don't! LOL
158.15150. On the site of Vintage Machine Photos I found a Kenmroe 148.... made in the mid 60s, so I figure maybe the 158 was manufactured in the late 60s/early 70s. Good guess or not? I would really like to read about them. there is a nice one for sale for $100. Thanks Charlee, I always appreciate your help/knowledge!
Linda, the 1515 was made in the years 1975 and 1977. (Got the info from the Old Kenmore sewing machine group on Yahoo.
Thanks Charlee. What do you think about the price? I always have a hard time asking a person to knock their price down. Just a softee I guess. LOL PS: it is really a pretty green machine and has all of the attachments/discs and manual.

I had one of those Kenmore 158.XXXs for a while. Does it have the double disks? Mine had double disks and you could adjust a knob and do all kinds of cool patterns with just one double disk and that knob or lever or what ever.... Very fun machine. I picked it up at a yard sale and re-sold it. While I was waiting for the buyer to come (only about 2 hours late...) I started seriously playing with the machine. If I would have known what all it did I would not have sold it.
