thank you everyone for your b'day wishes!!

i'd like to ask about 'QAYG' (quilt a you go)
i saw 'lacelady' had recommended doing this some where.
what are your thoughts on this? it could be a helpful thing to do? and also quick & easy as they are only 4.5" blocks we're dealing with. it would also be a life saver at the end, as most of the quilting work would be completed!!
what do others think??

I was contemplating that also, Jacquie, as I'll be doing most of mine in an RV. I'm thinking if I quilt as I go I'll leave the backing just a bit larger until I join blocks. Make sense anyone?

I think I'm using QAYG too without backing. To me it seems it's the only way to handle this one!

So if you qayg without the backing than the quilting in the sashing should be enough?

Yes Dakota....since these blocks are only 4.5"...that is close enough quilting for most batting recommendations. If the blocks were large, of course...this wouldn't work, but in this case, it works perfectly. I did mine without the backing, then SITD down both sides of the sashing to hold it all together in the end. I think Lacelady did 2 rows of stitching on her sashings.

curious, how do you QAYG without the backing???
surely you need the backing i would have thought? you then just need to turn under the edges at the back and slip stitch down.
have i started a new debate?? lol...
sorry ladies!!

am i just misunderstanding what you mean by 'backing'??
please define

No...you don't need the backing. Just quilt through the top and the batting only. You CAN certainly do it your way and do all that hand stitching, but I preferred that my backing be all in one piece...not 200+ pieces...so thats why we did it with the top/batting only...then sewed the pieces together, hand slip stitching the batting only, then laid it all on the backing fabric..sandwiching as usual. No new debate....no....

Backing is exactly what you are thinking it is....the entire back piece of fabric of the quilt.....the base of the quilt sandwich....

Ok, one more question. What batting would you recommend? The thin poly is good and thin but it pulls. Warm and natural that I have seems a bit thick. ???

that sounds very sensible! i like that idea, and will certainly go with it! and like you said before, the backing is quilted in the ditch with the sashing...
how great is that!
thank you for clarifying it for me

I'm not sure...I used W & N and my quilt is heavy as lead! Remember that you will actually end up with more fabric on the inside than on the outside due to all those seam allowances. The darn thing is HEAVY...so I would choose something very light and thin, although I don't know which specific type to recommend to you. Maybe someone with more experience with different battings can answer your question better than I.
